Google removed the call button from many map listings. What now?
On phones, many free map listings no longer show a one-tap Call button. Your phone number is still on your profile, but customers have to open the profile to reach it.
What changed
Local marketing agencies report that the change began in late 2025 and continued into early 2026. It affects free listings in the map results on phones. Paid options, like Local Services Ads and call ads, can still show a call button.
We haven't found a public statement from Google that explains the change, so treat any explanation you read as someone's opinion.
How big is it?
- One study: Local Dominator, which sells local SEO software, looked at 3,075 mobile results across 41 kinds of business. About 20% still showed a call button, and some kinds of business showed none, including electricians, landscaping, and tree service.
- Fewer calls: early reports from agencies mention roughly 20-40% fewer calls from free listings. These reports are anecdotal, not a measured study, and your own numbers may be different.
The picture also varies by search and may keep changing. The best check is simple: search for your business on your phone and see what your customers see.
What you can do now
- Make your profile worth opening. Keep your hours, services, and photos up to date, and ask customers for recent reviews.
- Give people a way to reach you without a call. Add a booking link to your profile, so someone who can't get through can still send you the job.
- Do the same on your website. Make calling, texting, asking for a quote, and booking easy to find.
- Follow up with people who don't finish. If someone starts to get in touch and stops, a quick call or email can save the job.
- Watch your own numbers. Compare calls and bookings from month to month before you spend money.
- Consider paid call ads if they pay for themselves. They can still show a call button, but they cost money for each lead or click.
How to add a booking link to your profile
Google changes these menus from time to time, but the usual steps are:
- Find your business on Google while signed in to the account that manages it.
- Open the bookings option in your profile tools.
- Paste your booking link and save.
Whether this option appears can depend on your business category, and Google decides how the link is shown. A plain link may not look the same as the booking buttons you see on some other profiles.
Can anyone bring the call button back?
No. Only Google controls it. Be careful with anyone who promises otherwise.
How Localwise HQ fits in
Localwise HQ gives you the booking link, a ready-made form for your trade, a website button, reminders, and a report on who didn't finish. It doesn't change how Google shows your listing, and Localwise HQ is not a Google partner.
